Maharashtra Well Positioned to Lead in AI Development, 50 Engines Created for Governance Use Cases
Maharashtra Takes the Lead in Artificial Intelligence
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on May 29 that the state is poised to lead the artificial intelligence (AI) race, citing its success in deploying and training AI models. His team unveiled various AI-driven governance and agriculture platforms, including MahaVistaar AI and the Digital Approval Twin platform, at the Mumbai Tech Week (MTW).
The Maharashtra government's ability to leverage legacy data has enabled it to build predictive models to mitigate disasters, a key factor in its success. Fadnavis emphasized that the state has made significant strides in AI adoption, with the entire surveillance system now being created using AI for tasks such as traffic control, disaster management, and law enforcement. This has streamlined processes and made them more efficient.

However, Fadnavis also cautioned that AI must be used ethically to avoid disruption and destruction on an unprecedented scale. The government's policy prioritizes equity, ensuring that AI is accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in addition to large corporations. Human oversight is also a crucial aspect of ethical AI, with the goal of placing humans at the center of AI-driven decision-making.
Mumbai's AI Ecosystem
The Tech Entrepreneurs Association of Mumbai (TEAM) released its Impact Report, highlighting Mumbai's thriving AI ecosystem. The report reveals that the city is home to over 100 unicorns, with an impressive 80% profitability rate. Mumbai-based companies are expected to attract over $6 billion in AI investments by 2035, with a projected $450 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows over the next decade.
Mumbai's dominance in the Indian tech industry is evident, with the city accounting for over 50% of the country's data centre capacity and boasting a workforce of over 2 million tech professionals, including 500,000 trained AI professionals.
