Lilly Eyes India Launch for Oral Obesity Treatment Orforglipron
Eli Lilly Signals Global Rollout of Obesity Pill in India
US drugmaker Eli Lilly has indicated that India will be part of its global rollout of orforglipron, a once-in-a-day oral weight-loss pill. This development comes at a time when obesity drugs, particularly the GLP-1 class, are seeing explosive growth in India, despite affordability, access, and long-term adherence concerns.
The introduction of orforglipron is significant, as it can expand access to obesity treatment in a price-sensitive market dominated by injectable drugs. Lilly's Mounjaro, a once-in-a-week injection, was the first GLP-1 medication to enter India's market for diabetes and weight loss and was an instant best-seller.
Lilly has not specified when it will approach the Indian drug regulator for selling orforglipron, but it plans to file for marketing the drug in around 40 countries, reflecting its ambition to globalize access to obesity treatment beyond high-income markets. The company earlier indicated that it might see regulatory nod in India by the second half of 2026, following the approval of the weight-loss pill orforglipron (sold as Foundayo) in the US on April 1, 2026.

India was part of Lilly's ATTAIN-1, a global Phase 3 clinical trial evaluating orforglipron for weight management. The inclusion of Indian patients in the trial will allow Lilly to seek faster approval. According to Lilly, trial results showed significant weight loss of up to 27.3 pounds (12.4 kg), while maintaining a safety profile consistent with injectable GLP-1 therapies.
The pill can be taken without food or water restrictions, an attribute that could prove critical in real-world settings. India is facing a rapidly worsening obesity-diabetes overlap, with millions of patients either overweight, pre-diabetic or living with type-2 diabetes.
Orforglipron addresses key barriers to GLP-1 drug uptake in India, including injectable delivery, high prices, and patient hesitancy. As a daily oral GLP-1 pill, it eliminates the need for injections, cold-chain logistics, or weekly dosing schedules, making it easier to integrate into routine clinical care.

The GLP-1 market has grown nearly 14-fold in four years, according to Pharmatrac MAT March 2026 data. Tirzepatide, Lilly's injectable GLP-1/GIP therapy marketed as Mounjaro, accounted for roughly Rs 988 crore, while semaglutide-based drugs generated about Rs 474 crore.
Lilly's orforglipron could be strategically vital to grow the overall market rather than fight solely on price within injectables. "We are focused on ensuring that innovation reaches patients who need it, and that includes markets like India where the burden of obesity and diabetes is rising sharply," said Winselow Tucker, President and General Manager, Eli Lilly and Company (India).
Investor Takeaway
Eli Lilly plans to launch its oral obesity treatment, orforglipron, in India, which could expand access to obesity treatment in the country.
