India's GCC Ecosystem Undergoes Significant Shift

India's Global Capability Centre (GCC) ecosystem is undergoing a significant transformation. What began as a cost-efficiency and back-office model has evolved into a strategic innovation engine driving global enterprises across AI, cybersecurity, engineering, advanced manufacturing, and digital transformation.

A recent discussion at CNBC-TV18 The Titans, presented by WeWork India and co-presented by PhonePe, highlighted the shift in the GCC landscape. Industry leaders Anand Bhushan, Saint-Gobain GCC Leader, and Arindam Sen, Partner & GCC Sector Leader (TMT), EY India, discussed how AI is reshaping the future of GCCs and what it will take to build knowledge-driven enterprises at scale. The conversation reflected a broader transformation underway within India's enterprise ecosystem, with India's GCCs no longer operating as support centres, but increasingly becoming core drivers of global innovation and decision-making.

India has evolved into one of the world's most important enterprise capability hubs, with over 2,100 GCCs employing more than 2.3 million professionals. However, the conversation quickly moved beyond scale to focus on the growing role of AI in redefining enterprise operations. Anand Bhushan emphasized that AI should not be viewed only through the lens of IT services, but as a transformational layer across entire businesses. He explained that GCCs today are deeply embedded into innovation, operations, and strategic processes rather than functioning as isolated support units.

Using Saint-Gobain's own transformation journey as an example, Bhushan demonstrated how the company is building "organizational memory" by connecting decades of operational, production, and maintenance data to empower teams globally. He also noted that AI is already delivering measurable productivity gains and could potentially drive 30-40% productivity improvements in the future.

Arindam Sen added that GCCs are increasingly becoming central to enterprise AI adoption because of their deep contextual understanding of businesses. While AI tools and platforms will continue evolving rapidly, enterprises still need teams that understand governance, cybersecurity, legacy systems, operations, and business objectives at scale.

The discussion also addressed concerns around automation and workforce disruption. Both speakers agreed that repetitive and transactional work will increasingly become automated. At the same time, they stressed that AI will create demand for new capabilities across data engineering, AI governance, enterprise transformation, and domain expertise.

A key theme running through the session was that India's advantage is steadily shifting from cost arbitrage to knowledge and innovation arbitrage. The ability to combine technical talent with deep business understanding is emerging as the defining strength of India's GCC ecosystem.

The conversation ultimately reflected a larger shift in how global enterprises view India. GCCs are no longer just execution centres supporting global operations, they are increasingly shaping how enterprises innovate, scale, and make decisions in an AI-driven world.
