India Installs First SkyCast System at Indira Gandhi International Airport
On Friday, Union Minister Jitendra Singh inaugurated India's first SkyCast system at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. This cutting-edge system is set to revolutionize aviation weather monitoring in the country by providing accurate weather information, nowcasting, and early warning services to support pilots, airlines, airport operators, and air traffic management agencies.
The SkyCast system brings together real-time measurements of fog, aerosols, turbulence, moisture, visibility, and atmospheric conditions into a single advanced aviation weather intelligence framework. This integration of multiple atmospheric observation technologies enables the system to monitor fog, detect turbulence, and provide high-impact weather forecasts.
With the installation of the SkyCast system, India has become the 19th country in the world to have this integrated atmospheric remote sensing system for aviation weather monitoring. Currently, there are only 18 such advanced systems in operation globally. The system's capabilities will not only support aviation operations but also enhance India's overall weather forecasting capabilities.

According to Ministry of Earth Sciences Secretary M Ravichandran, the SkyCast facility will generate vertical profiles of wind, humidity, and temperature through advanced instruments, leading to improved future weather predictions. This development is a significant milestone in India's aviation history, marking a major leap forward in the country's weather monitoring capabilities.
| Country | Number of SkyCast Systems |
|---|---|
| India | 1 |
| Global | 18 |
