India to Send 500 Export Delegations to Leverage Free Trade Agreements and Access New Markets
India's Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal announced on May 12 that the country will send 500 export delegations to countries around the world over the next eight to nine months. The move aims to help businesses leverage free trade agreements (FTAs) and access new markets, amidst slowing global growth.
The initiative is part of the government's efforts to support domestic companies in expanding overseas. The export delegations will focus particularly on countries with which India has FTAs. This approach is expected to benefit Indian businesses as companies worldwide look to cut costs and diversify sourcing in the face of weak demand in other economies.

Goyal clarified that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent remarks on expenditure were misinterpreted. The Prime Minister's comments were not intended to curb business travel, but rather to emphasize the importance of consumption and leisure expenditure. Goyal stated that the Prime Minister encouraged businesses to "go all over the world for your business, spend money to get more money, FX and investments."
National Outreach Network to be Established
The commerce ministry plans to hire around 1,000 people over the next two to three months to create a nationwide outreach network across all 780 districts. This network will be responsible for spreading awareness about export opportunities and FTA benefits. The ministry aims to establish a pyramid chain of trained representatives in each district to provide information on the benefits of FTAs and help businesses leverage technology.
