India Sees Excess Sale of Fertilisers Amid West Asia Crisis

India experienced an excess sale of urea and di-ammonium phosphate (DAP), the two highly consumed fertilisers, during the March-May period following the breakout of the West Asia crisis. According to Fertiliser Secretary Rajat Kumar Mishra, the country has adequate stocks to meet the kharif season demand.

The data shared by the fertiliser secretary indicates that about 50.59 lakh tonnes of urea were sold during the March 1 and May 25 period, marking a 4.58 lakh tonne increase from the 46.01 lakh tonnes sold in the same period last year. The excess sale of urea was largely confined to the states of Maharashtra, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand.

In terms of DAP sales, 12.49 lakh tonnes were sold during the March 1 and May 25 period, a 3.50 lakh tonne increase from the 8.98 lakh tonnes sold in the same period last year. The official data also highlights that there is an adequate stock of urea, DAP, Muriate of Potash (MoP), NPK, and Single Super Phosphate (SSP) as of May 26, compared to a year ago.

The total fertiliser stock stood at 200.68 lakh tonnes as of May 26, a 19.43 lakh tonne increase from the 181.25 lakh tonnes in the year-ago period. The government has made efforts to ensure adequate fertiliser supplies through both domestic and import supplies, amid the sharp increase in global prices. So far, about 25 lakh tonnes of urea and 13.50 lakh tonnes of DAP have been imported.

The government is maintaining constant dialogues with 28 missions abroad to ensure uninterrupted supplies.
