India Commits to Enhancing Kimberley Process for Natural Diamond Trade
India Commits to Strengthening Kimberley Process in Global Marketplace
India, the world's leading centre for diamond cutting and polishing, reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the 3Cs - Credibility, Compliance, and Consumer Confidence - at the conclusion of Kimberley Process Intersessional 2026 under its chairmanship. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal expressed the country's dedication to working with all participants and stakeholders to strengthen the Kimberley Process's (KP) relevance in a rapidly evolving global marketplace.
The natural diamond sector is a vital part of the global economy, sustaining millions of livelihoods across producing, processing, and consuming nations. India will continue to champion a KP that is robust, transparent, and responsive to both industry and consumer expectations. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) is an international regulatory system designed to prevent "conflict diamonds" - also known as blood diamonds - from entering the mainstream market.
During the Intersessional, Working Groups and Committees held discussions on key areas, including monitoring, technical processes, governance, statistics, and artisanal production. The focus was on strengthening transparency, improving operational mechanisms, and reinforcing trust across the natural diamond value chain. These discussions will carry forward into the KP Plenary scheduled to be held in New Delhi later this year, with a continued focus on credibility, compliance, and consumer confidence under India's chairmanship through 2026.
