The global steel industry is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for approximately 7-9% of total global emissions. The industry's traditional manufacturing process, known as blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF), is highly carbon-intensive.

The BF-BOF process emits an average of 2.33 tons of carbon dioxide per ton of steel produced, highlighting the need for more sustainable alternatives. This environmental concern has sparked interest in developing cleaner production methods and reducing the industry's carbon footprint.
