Heatwave Forecast Lifts Power and Air-Conditioning Stocks

Rising temperatures and fresh heatwave forecasts across North India lifted sentiment in power and air-conditioning stocks on Monday. After recent spells of rainfall and thundershowers, several northern states are expected to see temperatures climb above 43 degrees Celsius in the coming days.

Shares of NTPC, India's largest power generation company, rose 1.31 percent to Rs 398.75 in late morning trade. Tata Power gained 1.77 percent to Rs 435.15, while Adani Power advanced 2.62 percent to Rs 203.70.

Cooling appliance makers also saw buying interest, with Voltas up 1.10 percent at Rs 1,456, and Blue Star climbing 2.30 percent to Rs 1,909.10.

Meanwhile, electricity consumers in Delhi may face higher power bills in the coming months after the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL) rejected a request by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) to extend the deadline for clearing dues of around Rs 30,000 crore. The pending amount is linked to recoveries payable to Delhi's power distribution companies under a broader plan to settle long-standing liabilities in the power sector.

The matter relates to Supreme Court directions issued in August 2025, which asked all state electricity regulators to begin liquidation of pending dues from April 2024 and complete the process by April 2028. The Supreme Court had also said regulators could use all available measures to clear the dues, including electricity tariff revisions if necessary.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions in Delhi for the first time this season after temperatures rose sharply in the capital. Delhi's maximum temperature touched 40.1 degrees Celsius on Sunday, around three degrees above normal, just days after rainfall had provided temporary relief from the heat. According to the IMD, the yellow alert will remain in place for isolated areas from Wednesday to Friday, when temperatures may rise to 43 degrees Celsius.
