
HDFC Bank Reports Reduction in Headcount for Fiscal Year 2026
HDFC Bank Trims Workforce Amid Continued Growth
HDFC Bank has made a strategic shift in its workforce, evident in a recent reduction in employee count despite continued growth in advances and deposits during the year. The bank's total employee count stood at 2,11,178 as of March 2026, a decline from 2,14,521 a year ago and 2,15,739 in December 2025, according to the company's latest disclosures.
Notably, this marks a significant turnaround from the second quarter of FY23, when the merger between HDFC Bank and HDFC Ltd was operationalized, resulting in a total employee count of 1,97,899. The bank's workforce had been expanding over the past three fiscal years, with a notable drop from December 2025 to March 2026. As a result, the bank's employee costs decreased to approximately Rs 6,227 crore by the end of the March quarter, compared to Rs 7,203 crore at the end of the December quarter.
In other key developments, HDFC Bank's distribution network expanded to 9,689 branches and 21,172 ATMs across 4,175 cities/towns as of March 31, 2026, up from 9,455 branches and 21,139 ATMs across 4,150 cities/towns as of March 31, 2025. The bank also maintained a network of 14,400 business correspondents, primarily manned by Common Service Centres.

In a separate development, HDFC Bank reported a 9% rise in standalone net profit to Rs 19,221 crore for the quarter ended March, up from Rs 17,616 crore in the year-ago period.
