HCLTech Adapts to LPG Shortage, Offers Remote Work Amid Office Cafeteria Disruptions
HCLTech Offers Remote Work Option to Chennai Employees Amidst LPG Shortage
HCLTech, a leading Indian IT services company, has granted its employees in Chennai the option to work from home on 12-13 March due to a cooking gas shortage that has disrupted cafeteria operations. The company's decision was made in response to several cafeteria vendors being unable to operate, resulting from the ongoing LPG crunch.
The LPG shortage has also affected restaurants across India, with many forced to shut their doors despite the government's assurances. As a result, the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran is having a significant impact on India Inc, with global search firms warning that companies with exposure to the region are putting senior-level hiring on hold. Consulting firms also predict that bonuses may be under pressure for companies affected by the conflict, particularly in sectors such as energy, real estate, construction, and logistics.
The conflict has drawn in several countries in the region and forced governments to take sides, with significant implications for India. Over 9 million Indians live and work in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain. The region attracts a large number of migrant workers, including white-collar employees.

India Inc has taken steps to ensure the safety of its employees, mapping staff locations, advising safety protocols, and creating war rooms. However, the full impact of the conflict is expected to be felt over the next few months. In response to the LPG shortage, the price of a 14.2 kg domestic cooking gas cylinder has been raised by ₹60, while the 19 kg commercial cylinder has become costlier by ₹144 across major cities and states in India.
Investor Takeaway
Investors should be cautious of potential disruptions in the energy sector due to global conflicts.
