Counterfeit Drugs Racket Busted in Gurugram

The Haryana Food and Drug Control Administration, in coordination with local police, has busted a counterfeit drugs racket involving Mounjaro (tirzepatide) injections in Gurugram, seizing fake stock valued at around Rs 70 lakh, reports said.

On Sunday evening, a joint team of state drug inspectors and law enforcement personnel intercepted a car in Gurugram carrying multiple packs of injections falsely branded as Mounjaro, in strengths ranging from 2.5 mg to 15 mg. The seized injections were packed in cartons and transported in ice boxes, pointing to an organised supply chain designed to mimic legitimate cold-chain handling. Further investigations are underway to trace the origin of the counterfeit products and identify those involved in the production and distribution network.

Eli Lilly and Company, the maker of the blockbuster drug Mounjaro, has been alerted to the seizure and described the products as "suspicious and counterfeit" items allegedly carrying its brand name. The company welcomed the regulatory action and said it was cooperating fully with authorities.

Lilly takes patient safety extremely seriously and welcomes regulatory authority's action against illicit medicines. The company is actively supporting the investigation and will continue to work with regulatory and law enforcement authorities worldwide to protect patients from the risks of counterfeit products. Stronger, coordinated enforcement must be sustained if we are to protect patients from unsafe fake medicines.

Mounjaro, a GLP-1 receptor agonist prescribed for diabetes and obesity, has been top-selling drug in India, increasingly in the spotlight amid a surge in demand for weight-loss drugs.
