Government Prioritizes Sindhudurg for Shipbuilding Project, Identifies Three Potential Sites
Maharashtra Government Prioritizes Sindhudurg for Maritime Development
Maharashtra Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane directed officials to undertake detailed surveys and infrastructure planning for proposed shipbuilding projects at Nandgaon, Dighi, and Vijaydurg. The aim is to tap into the maritime development potential of Sindhudurg district, which the minister believes should receive special focus due to its proximity to Goa and favourable maritime conditions.
During a review meeting held at the state secretariat, officials presented technical and economic assessments of the three proposed sites. The assessments included details related to sea depth, geological conditions, connectivity, and future industrial opportunities. The technical evaluations highlighted the potential challenges and opportunities at each site.
Sindhudurg district is expected to be prioritized for future development. The minister directed authorities to identify around 30 acres of land and assess issues related to forest clearances. Field surveys of the proposed locations are to be conducted immediately, and reports are to be submitted.
Preliminary layouts have been prepared for all three locations. Due to limited land availability along the coast, parts of the shipbuilding infrastructure may have to be developed through reclamation in the sea.
| Location | Land Availability | Reclamation Required |
|---|---|---|
| Nandgaon | Limited | Yes (4 km into the sea) |
| Dighi | Limited | Yes (not specified) |
| Vijaydurg | Limited | Yes (not specified) |
The presentation noted that Nandgaon, in Palghar district, has strategic importance due to its proximity to the Tarapur atomic power station. However, the site has loose sedimentary geological formations and hard rock at shallow depths, requiring extensive dredging work. The site also falls under CRZ-1 and CRZ-3 categories, making environmental clearances a key factor.
At the same time, Nandgaon was found to have strong connectivity through national highways, the Dedicated Freight Corridor, and proposed infrastructure projects. The government is carrying out strategic planning across coastal regions in view of growing investment opportunities in shipbuilding, shipping, maritime tourism, and allied sectors.
