Government Considers Halting Component PLI Approvals Amid Electronics Industry's Failure to Meet Design, Six Sigma Standards
Government Issues Warning to India's Electronics Manufacturing Industry
The Indian government has issued a stern warning to the country's electronics manufacturing sector, indicating that future incentives and approvals may be at risk if companies fail to enhance their design capabilities and meet quality standards. According to Ashwini Vaishnaw, Electronics and IT Minister, the government has not received the expected level of support from the industry in building in-house design capabilities.
Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of domestic design ecosystems, stating that design will have a significant value in capturing a large part of the market. He also expressed dissatisfaction over the absence of a structured Six Sigma quality programme within the sector, cautioning that Indian products risk falling short of international benchmarks without such frameworks.
The government has given the industry 15 days to propose a structure to address quality gaps. If necessary, Vaishnaw warned that the government is prepared to take harsh measures, including pausing further approvals and disbursements under existing schemes. This move is aimed at encouraging companies to invest in domestic design ecosystems and improve their quality standards to remain competitive in the global market.
