Safety Concerns Rise in India's Adventure Tourism Industry

A recent near-death experience during a parasailing ride in Goa has sparked fresh concerns over safety standards in India's adventure tourism industry. The incident, which went viral on social media this week, involved a woman identified as nutritionist Sushmitha Gowrav. According to reports, Gowrav fell into the sea during the activity, and a rope tightened around her neck, leaving her struggling in panic before being rescued.

The incident gained national attention after Gowrav posted a video on Instagram with the caption, "1 minute of thrill almost cost me everything." In her post, she described the terrifying moments after losing control during the parasailing session. The video has received millions of views and prompted widespread debate online about the condition of equipment and the lack of strict enforcement of safety protocols at tourist beaches.

Several users questioned whether operators were conducting proper inspections before allowing tourists to participate in high-risk activities. This latest scare comes barely weeks after another parasailing accident in Goa, in which a tourist reportedly fell into the sea after a cable snapped mid-air near Baga Beach. While no major injuries were reported in that case, the incident renewed scrutiny of adventure sports operators and maintenance standards.

Adventure tourism experts say that parasailing, when conducted with certified equipment and trained staff, is generally considered safe. However, poor maintenance, overcrowded beaches, and unregulated operators can sharply increase risks. Safety experts recommend checking harnesses, ropes, weather conditions, and operator credentials before taking part in water sports activities.

In a message to travelers, Gowrav urged tourists to ask questions and trust their instincts before signing up for such experiences. "Some experiences do not stay as memories. They stay as trauma," she said.
