Indian Equity Markets Anticipate a Muted Start

The BSE Sensex and Nifty 50, India's equity benchmark indices, are expected to have a subdued opening on May 27, as the GIFT Nifty, which was trading marginally lower around 23,916.50 in early trade, indicates a lackluster start for the Indian equity markets.

Market Performance on May 26

The previous session, May 26, saw a sharp rally in the market, but it ended on a weak note, amidst heightened volatility driven by renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and monthly F&O expiry. The market opened on a weak note and remained volatile for most of the session, oscillating between gains and losses after reports of fresh U.S. military action dampened hopes of an early de-escalation in West Asia. However, intensified selling pressure in the final hour dragged the Nifty below the crucial 24,000 mark at close.

The Sensex closed at 76,009.70, down 479.26 points or 0.63 percent, while the Nifty closed at 23,913.70, down 118 points or 0.49 percent.

Global Market Trends

The global markets are also experiencing a mixed trend, with Asian stocks climbing to a record, driven by renewed momentum in technology shares and easing geopolitical tensions. Oil slipped while the dollar weakened. In the U.S., the S&P 500 and Nasdaq hit record closing highs on Tuesday, as AI-fueled optimism offset anxiety over Middle East peace talks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 118.02 points, or 0.23%, to 50,461.68, while the S&P 500 gained 45.65 points, or 0.61%, to 7,519.12 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 312.21 points, or 1.19%, to 26,656.18.
