Weight Loss Market Poised for Growth with Generic Options

Novo Nordisk's patent on semaglutide is set to expire on 20 March, paving the way for Indian firms to offer more affordable generic options. Companies such as Ajanta Pharma, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Lupin, Mankind Pharma, and Sun Pharmaceuticals are expected to capitalize on the demand.

Over 50 brands are preparing to enter the Indian market with generic versions of semaglutide by mid-March. According to sources, these generic versions are expected to be priced around ₹5,000 ($54) per week, which is approximately 50% less than existing prices. The influx of additional medicines has prompted clinics, hospitals, and telehealth companies to expand services, with expected revenue growth of up to ₹11 crore per facility dedicated to obesity programs.

The Indian market, with the world's third-largest overweight population, presents a significant opportunity for growth. The GLP-1 market size is expected to expand from ₹1,000 crore to ₹5,000 crore by 2030. Healthcare facilities are preparing for the surge in demand, with Apollo Health and Fortis Healthcare starting or expanding services for obesity management. Online pharmacies such as Tata 1MG Technologies and PharmEasy are also offering consultation and check-up packages.

Dr. Reddy's is in talks with healthcare providers and hospitals to roll out patient support programs, while Enlighten Now Healthcare's weight management platform Elevate Now is in talks for tie-ups with gym chains and manufacturers. The entry of generic options is expected to lead to a 40-50% drop in drug prices, as more competitors enter the market.

Investor Takeaway

Investors should expect a potential drop in drug prices in the weight loss market.
