
Fertilizer Output Remains Steady Amid West Asia Crisis as Government Secures 37 Lakh Ton Urea Imports for Kharif Season
Domestic Urea Production Reaches 37.49 Lakh Tonnes in March-April
The government announced on Thursday that domestic urea production has reached 37.49 lakh tonnes in March-April, closely matching last year's levels despite the crisis in West Asia. To meet the shortfall ahead of the Kharif season, the government has secured 37 lakh tonnes of imported urea.
Fertiliser Production and Imports
Total domestic fertiliser production stood at 62.37 lakh tonnes during March-April, with imports at 15.39 lakh tonnes. In a statement, officials highlighted the strength of domestic production and import of fertilisers, adding approximately 78 lakh tonnes to availability in the crisis situation.

India produced 16.49 lakh tonnes of urea in March and 21 lakh tonnes in April, taking the total to 37.49 lakh tonnes. This is almost the same as the production during the same period last year, with the government reaching that level.
To meet the urea shortfall, the government floated a global tender and secured about 37 lakh tonnes of urea. The availability of fertiliser raw materials is being regularly reviewed at all levels.
Fertiliser Stocks for Kharif 2026

For Kharif 2026, against a requirement of 390.45 lakh tonnes, current stocks stand at 193.38 lakh tonnes, approximately 50 per cent of the total requirement. Urea availability is at 73.81 lakh tonnes, DAP at 23.47 lakh tonnes, with other fertilisers also well-stocked.
The government has maintained that fertiliser availability remains robust and supplies continue to exceed requirement. There has been no change in the maximum retail price (MRP) of fertilisers.
