Female Representation Reaches 1 Million in Corporate Boardrooms, Despite Persistent Glass Ceiling
Women's Board Representation in India Inc. Hits One-Million Mark
A new government report reveals that women's participation in India Inc. has surged over the past nine years, with female representation on company boards increasing by 2.3 times to cross the one-million mark in 2025.
According to the report, the number of women directors on boards has risen sharply from 447,809 in 2017 to 1,008,570 in 2025, while their share in total board positions has grown from 25.8 percent to 29.1 percent. Male board representation has also increased during the period, from 1.29 million to 2.46 million.
This significant rise in women's board representation suggests that regulatory mandates and diversity targets are having a visible impact at the board level. Women now occupy nearly three out of every ten board seats in India, compared to roughly one in four in 2017.

Progress in Senior Management Positions Remains Slow
In contrast, progress in senior management positions has been slower. Female representation in senior leadership roles increased from 23,685 in 2017 to 42,436 in 2025, a rise of nearly 1.8 times. However, women's share in senior leadership roles has moved up only modestly from 13.6 percent to 17.1 percent over the same period.
The data also shows that male senior management positions have risen from 150,387 to 206,201, indicating that the gender gap remains wide in executive decision-making roles.

At the broader management level, women have seen stronger gains. Female representation in other management positions has more than doubled from 432,484 in 2017 to 980,634 in 2025, while their share has increased from 26.5 percent to 29.6 percent.
This suggests that the leadership pipeline for women is improving in middle management, but the transition into top executive roles remains slower than board-level appointments.
