Estonia Emerges as Key Gateway for India's Northern Europe Trade Following EU Free Trade Agreement
India and Estonia: A Growing Partnership with a Bright Future
Estonia can serve as a gateway to the northern European market for India once the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union comes into effect, according to Indian Ambassador Ashish Sinha. The bilateral relationship between India and Estonia is on an upswing, with a robust base of existing trade that can be used as a "springboard" for further engagement.
The Indian Ambassador to Estonia noted that the overall bilateral relationship is getting stronger, with the India-EU FTA set to boost engagement between small and medium-sized industries in the two countries. The agreement will also create new opportunities for Estonian dairy and agriculture products to enter the Indian market, while Indian businesses will have access to the broader EU market through Estonia.
One of the key benefits of Estonia's e-residency program is its appeal to Indian businessmen and high-value industrialists. Around 5,000 Indians have taken advantage of the program, with over 1,000 companies registered under the e-residency initiative. Sinha emphasized that these elements provide a solid foundation for further engagement when the India-EU FTA comes into force.

Trade and Investment
Indian exports to Estonia have not only grown but have exceeded target figures in the last financial year. The new and emerging technologies, including digital technologies, IT, AI-enabled technologies, and software as a service, have great potential for growth. Estonia's expertise in digital transformation and India's capacity to roll out digital innovations at the population scale can learn from each other and grow.
The India-EU FTA, described as the "mother of all deals," will create a market of about 2 billion people, with 93% of Indian shipments enjoying duty-free access to the 27-nation bloc. The deal will also make imports of luxury cars and wines from the EU less expensive.

In the context of the Ukraine-Russia conflict, Sinha emphasized that India and Estonia share similar values, including democracy, pluralism, and respect for international law. Both countries want to grow and support international peace and security. The Indian Ambassador noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visits to Moscow and Kyiv in 2024 demonstrated India's commitment to dialogue and diplomacy.
History of Ties
India was one of the first countries to recognize Estonia after its independence in 1991 and established diplomatic ties. The Estonian embassy in Delhi has been functioning since 2011, and India established its mission in Estonia in 2021. The relationship between the two countries is on an upswing, with improvements in almost every area of engagement.
Recent Developments
In February this year, Estonian President Alar Karis visited India for the AI summit, and last year, Prime Minister Modi and President Karis met at the sidelines of the AI summit in Paris. The two countries have also had recent political consultations between their foreign ministries, enabling an overall review of the relationship in each area of engagement.
The Indian envoy highlighted the significance of Estonia's small size, with a 1.3 million population, as a member of the EU, offering the broader EU markets for Indian products. He encouraged Indian businesses to look beyond Estonia's size and take advantage of its robust ports and systems.
Indian Businesses in Estonia
There are around 2,000 Indians living and working in Estonia, primarily in the digital and technology sector. Many of them have turned into entrepreneurs and started their own businesses, with some even entering the startup space. Sinha's message to Indian businesses is to not overlook Estonia's potential due to its small size.
