Emcure Cuts Price of Poviztra Amid Ongoing Semaglutide Price Competition in India
Emcure Pharmaceuticals Reduces Price of Weight-Loss Drug Poviztra Amidst Intensifying Price War
Emcure Pharmaceuticals has significantly lowered the price of its weight-loss drug Poviztra, a move that marks the latest escalation in the intensifying price war triggered by the loss of exclusivity for semaglutide injections in India.
The Pune-based drugmaker has announced that the starting dose of Poviztra will now cost Rs 3,999 a month, a 55% cut from earlier levels, while prices across strengths have been lowered by an average of 47%. The revised prices take effect from April 3, placing the drug among the lowest-priced branded semaglutide pen therapies in the market.
Poviztra, a second brand of Novo Nordisk's semaglutide injection for obesity, is sold in a once-weekly pen device. The move highlights how rapidly pricing dynamics have shifted since Indian manufacturers began launching generic versions of semaglutide earlier this year, dramatically undercutting the original innovator products. Several local players have introduced vial-based and pen-based versions at prices as low as Rs 1,200-Rs 1,500 per month, forcing both multinational and Indian partners of the innovator to rethink their pricing strategies.

The semaglutide market has undergone a significant transformation since the loss of exclusivity. Initially priced as a premium therapy in India, limiting uptake to a small, affluent segment, the market has now opened up to a wider audience. The steep price cut by Emcure suggests that even innovator-linked brands are now prioritizing volume and access over premium positioning.
Under the new pricing, Poviztra will range from Rs 3,999 per month for the 0.25-mg starting dose to Rs 8,999 for the 2.4-mg maintenance dose, sharply narrowing the gap with generic alternatives while retaining the convenience of a pen injector. Emcure said the decision was aimed at widening access to a "globally established molecule" as obesity rates climb across India.
The company cited clinical data showing semaglutide is one of the most extensively studied weight-management therapies globally, with nearly a decade of use and over 49 million patient-years of exposure. This move comes just days after Novo Nordisk itself announced deep cuts to the prices of Ozempic and Wegovy in India, signalling that even the originator has accepted that defending volume and relevance in India now requires materially lower prices.
