Electric Vehicle Adoption Accelerates in FY26, West Bengal Drives Growth as Uttar Pradesh's Share Decreases
Electric Vehicle Demand Shifts in India as Geopolitical Tensions Loom
India's electric vehicle (EV) adoption is becoming increasingly geographically diversified, with a notable shift in sales distribution among states. According to FY26 data, Uttar Pradesh remains the largest market, with 408,439 units sold, although its share of national sales has declined as other states have expanded faster.
West Bengal Leads the Charge
West Bengal has emerged as a key player in the EV market, with sales surging 153 percent year-on-year to 132,170 units. This growth has resulted in a significant increase in its share of national sales, more than doubling to 5.5 percent from 2.7 percent. This marks the sharpest gain among states, highlighting West Bengal's rapid expansion in the EV market.
Rising Stars in the EV Market
Other fast-growing markets, such as Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, have also posted strong increases. Madhya Pradesh recorded a 45.5 percent rise in sales to 1,56,591 units, lifting its share to 6.5 percent from 5.5 percent. Tamil Nadu saw volumes grow 35.9 percent to 1,87,145 units, with its share rising to 7.8 percent from 7 percent.

In contrast, early leaders such as Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have ceded ground in the EV market. Uttar Pradesh's share fell 2.3 percentage points to 16.9 percent from 19.2 percent despite an 8 percent rise in volumes. Maharashtra, the second-largest market with 2,74,004 units, also saw its share decline to 11.3 percent from 12.5 percent, even as sales grew 11.2 percent.
Slow Growth and Declines
At the other end of the spectrum, several states have recorded flat or negative growth. Haryana's EV sales declined 10.8 percent, reducing its share to 1.5 percent from 2.1 percent. Punjab, Chandigarh, Goa, and Jammu & Kashmir also saw marginal declines, while Himachal Pradesh contracted 7.2 percent.
Broadening EV Adoption
The data indicates a clear broadening of EV adoption, with faster-growing states steadily gaining share from early leaders. As the EV market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see which states will emerge as key players in the coming years.
