ECB to Meet with Banks to Address Artificial Intelligence-Identified Lending Weaknesses
European Central Bank to Press Lenders on Cybersecurity Amid AI Threat
The European Central Bank (ECB) is planning to urge lenders to accelerate their efforts to secure their IT systems, following a meeting on cybersecurity risks with the latest artificial intelligence models. According to the Financial Times, ECB Executive Board member Frank Elderson stated that despite years of engagement on cybersecurity issues with banks, the rapid progress in AI necessitates a faster response.
The ECB is set to warn banks at a meeting on Tuesday about potential threats to the financial system highlighted by Anthropic PBC's Claude Mythos Preview and similar AI systems. Elderson told the FT that the ECB will ask US banks with access to the technology to share insights with European peers excluded from testing. He emphasized that European banks cannot use their lack of access to Mythos as an excuse for inaction, as malicious actors could soon gain access to the technology.
The use of AI models like Mythos, which can identify unknown flaws in IT systems, has sent a wave of anxiety across Europe. Anthropic is limiting access to Mythos, and the European Union is in talks with the company about having companies and banks tested for vulnerabilities that Mythos uncovers. European Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis mentioned on May 4 that the European Union is discussing this matter with Anthropic.

Recent findings from Mythos have been alarming, with Anthropic revealing last month that the AI model identified thousands of severe vulnerabilities across major operating systems and browsers. This has led to discussions between French AI startup Mistral AI and European banks about deploying its own product to uncover security flaws.
| Company | Identified Vulnerabilities |
|---|---|
| Anthropic PBC | Thousands of severe vulnerabilities across major operating systems and browsers |
| French AI startup Mistral AI | Not specified |

Investor Takeaway
Investors should be cautious of potential cybersecurity threats to the financial system.
