Fuel Hoarding Concerns Spark Debate Amid Rumors of Possible Fuel Shortage

A viral video on social media has raised concerns about panic buying and fuel hoarding in the country. The footage shows a water tanker being filled with thousands of litres of fuel at a petrol pump, sparking a heated debate online about the legitimacy of such large-scale fuel purchases from retail petrol pumps.

According to the video, the tanker in question has a capacity of around 4,000-5,000 litres, enough to meet the monthly fuel needs of hundreds of people. This has raised concerns that individual stockpiling could quickly drain the country's fuel reserves, which the government claims have a stockpile of 50-60 days.

The video was shared by social media account The Skin Doctor on X, warning that panic buying could quickly exhaust the country's fuel reserves if authorities fail to curb rumours and hoarding. The account claimed that the tanker seen in the video was being filled with nearly 5,000 litres of fuel, and that such stockpiling could lead to a supply disruption.

Some social media users have questioned the safety risks of transporting fuel in containers not designed for fuel, citing the highly flammable nature of petrol. Others have reported noticing unusual demand at petrol pumps, with some stations already running dry.

As a result, some users are urging authorities to take stricter action against hoarders and enforce existing laws such as the Essential Commodities Act to prevent a supply disruption. This includes cracking down on black marketeers and individuals stockpiling large quantities of fuel.

Investor Takeaway

Investors should be cautious of potential fuel shortages and their impact on the economy.
