Communication Apps Face December 31 Deadline for Compliance with SIM Binding Rules
SIM-Binding Rules Compliance Deadline Set for December 31
The Indian government has issued directions to certain app-based communication service providers to link SIM cards with their respective services by December 31, 2026. This move aims to strengthen the SIM-binding rule, which mandates messaging platforms to provide their service on a mobile device only if there is an active SIM available in it.
The Department of Telecom (DoT) had previously mandated that users from active sessions of web versions of apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, etc., be logged out after six hours. This was a measure to enhance security and prevent misuse of these platforms.
The compliance deadline for the SIM-binding rule was earlier set for March 28, 2026. However, the government has now extended the deadline to December 31, 2026, allowing service providers more time to meet the requirements.

To ensure compliance with the SIM-binding rule, communication service apps will need to report their adherence to the regulations by the new deadline. The government has not specified a time period for logging out of web services, but has emphasized the importance of risk-based analysis in implementing these measures.
| App | Compliance Deadline | Earlier Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| December 31, 2026 | March 28, 2026 | |
| Telegram | December 31, 2026 | March 28, 2026 |
| Signal | December 31, 2026 | March 28, 2026 |
The government's move to extend the compliance deadline is expected to provide service providers with sufficient time to adapt to the new regulations. As the deadline draws near, it remains to be seen how communication service apps will implement the SIM-binding rule and ensure their compliance with the government's directives.
