LPG Cylinder Prices Hiked in India, Domestic Cylinders Remain Unchanged

The price of a 19kg commercial LPG cylinder has been increased by Rs 993, effective today. According to the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), a 19kg cylinder will now cost Rs 3,071.5 in Delhi. This is the third time that the price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder has been increased since February 28, when the US and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran.

The price hike comes after a series of increases in the past few months. In early March, the price of a 19kg commercial LPG cylinder saw an increase of about Rs 115, followed by a further hike of nearly Rs 200 on April 1. The IOC has attributed the price increase to global energy prices, but has stated that petrol and diesel prices continue to remain the same.

However, the prices of domestic cylinders have not been changed, according to the IOC. The company has stated that it has chosen to absorb the increase in global fuel costs to shield carriers and passengers. Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices for domestic airlines have also been left unchanged.

In a separate development, the government has cut the windfall gains tax on the export of diesel to Rs 23 per litre and aviation turbine fuel to Rs 33/litre, effective today. The finance ministry has stated that existing excise duty rates on petrol and diesel for domestic consumption will remain unchanged. The special additional excise duty on diesel exports has been reduced to Rs 23/litre from Rs 55.5/litre, while the levy on ATF has been reduced to Rs 33/litre from Rs 42/litre.

Investor Takeaway

Investors should be aware of potential price fluctuations in commercial LPG cylinders.
