China Urges Unhindered Passage Through Strait of Hormuz Following Attack on Indian-Linked Vessels
Maritime Security Concerns in Strait of Hormuz Escalate Tensions
China has reaffirmed its stance on the importance of "unimpeded passage" through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping corridor that has been the subject of recent tensions. The statement comes after Iranian forces reportedly fired on Indian-flagged vessels transiting the strait, raising fresh concerns over maritime security.
The incident occurred last week when two India-linked ships, the VLCC Samnar Herad and bulk carrier Jag Arnav, came under attack while crossing the strait. Officials confirmed that no crew members were injured in the incident, but the episode prompted New Delhi to summon Iran's ambassador Mohammad Fathali to convey its concerns. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri underscored the seriousness of the incident and stressed the need to ensure the safety of commercial shipping.
China's foreign ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, emphasized the importance of preventing the situation from worsening and expressed China's readiness to work with the international community to contribute to de-escalation. The statement appears to be a clear message to all parties involved to avoid further escalation.

China has also issued a warning over ongoing joint military drills involving the United States, Japan, and the Philippines. Guo cautioned that countries "blindly binding themselves together in the name of security" risk "playing with fire" that could ultimately backfire. The exercises, involving thousands of American and Philippine troops along with a significant Japanese contingent, are taking place against the backdrop of rising regional tensions. The drills include live-fire exercises in northern areas facing the Taiwan Strait and in provinces bordering the disputed South China Sea, where China and the Philippines have had repeated confrontations.
