Blackstone Eyes Initial foray into Indian Sports through Potential Investment in IPL Franchises
Blackstone Inc. Considers Investment in Indian Premier League Team
Blackstone Inc., the world's largest alternative asset management firm, is considering a potential investment in the Indian Premier League (IPL) via its Blackstone Private Equity Strategies Fund (BXPE). The investment, valued between $200 million and $300 million, would be made in either the Rajasthan Royals or Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), two IPL teams currently up for sale.
BXPE, the firm's fund for wealthy individuals, would allow Blackstone to retain the stake for a longer period than a typical drawdown fund allows. This investment marks what could be the firm's first foray into sports investments.

Several private equity firms are also considering investments in sports franchises and leagues. KKR & Co. recently acquired Arctos Partners, which holds stakes in teams such as the Buffalo Bills and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Carlyle Group Inc. also struck a deal with Oracle Red Bull Racing last year.
Franchise Sales
The final bids for RCB were submitted this week, with EQT AB and Wipro founder Azim Premji's family office among the buyers. The Rajasthan Royals bid is still being evaluated. The two teams are estimated to be valued between $1.3 billion and $2 billion.

The IPL is widely regarded as the most popular and lucrative competition, combining US-style marketing with Bollywood's glamour. The tournament sees 10 teams compete for the top spot over eight weeks each spring. With around 917,000 millionaires and 188 billionaires, owning a stake in an IPL franchise provides significant consumer visibility in one of the fastest-growing wealth markets globally.
BXPE's Investment Track Record
BXPE allocates roughly 30% of its capital to standalone deals outside its primary private equity funds, including investments in ventures such as SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk.
Investor Takeaway
Investors should consider the potential for private equity firms to invest in sports franchises and leagues.
