BJP Expands Electoral Footprint Across Southern and Eastern States
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made significant gains in the southern and eastern states, with 2026 marking its strongest-ever performance in Kerala and West Bengal, while also improving vote share in Tamil Nadu despite mixed outcomes in seats.
West Bengal: Sharp Gains for BJP In West Bengal, the BJP registered its sharpest gains, with vote share rising to 45.76 percent in 2026, up from 37.97 percent in 2021 and just 4.06 percent in 2011. This surge in vote share translated to a significant expansion in electoral dominance, with the party's seat tally surging to 206 seats, compared with 77 in 2021. This gives BJP a continuous presence from East to West, from Gujarat to Manipur.
Expanding Presence in Kerala In Kerala, the party recorded its highest-ever vote share of 11.42 percent, improving from 11.3 percent in 2021 and 6.03 percent in 2011. The seat count rose to 3 seats, compared with none in 2021 and just 1 seat in 2016.

Tamil Nadu and Assam: Mixed Outcomes Tamil Nadu also saw a marginal uptick in vote share to 2.98 percent in 2026, up from 2.62 percent in 2021, although the party's seat tally declined to one seat from four seats earlier. In contrast, Assam saw a significant increase in vote share to 38.06 percent, compared with 33.21 percent in 2021 and 11.47 percent in 2011. The seat count rose to 82 seats, up from 60 seats in both 2016 and 2021.
Puducherry: A Divergent Trend However, in Puducherry, the trend diverged. Vote share declined to 12.45 percent in 2026 from 13.66 percent in 2021, while seat count fell to 4 from 6, marking the only region in the dataset where the party's performance weakened.
