Banks to Remain Shut in Several Indian Cities on May 28 Due to Eid al-Adha Celebrations
Bank customers in several parts of India may face branch closures on May 28, 2026, due to the Eid al-Adha (Bakrid) celebrations. Public sector and private sector lenders, including State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and other major banks, are expected to remain shut in multiple cities across the country.
Customers planning to visit branches for cheque clearance or other banking work are advised to check local holiday schedules in advance. The Eid al-Adha festival will be observed on May 28 this year, following the sighting of the crescent moon and the beginning of the Islamic month of Zil Hijja on May 18. Earlier, the festival was expected to fall on May 27.

Digital Banking Services Remain Available
Even though physical branches are closed in several regions, online banking services continue to function normally. Customers can access internet banking, mobile banking, ATMs, UPI services, IMPS transfers, and other digital payment facilities without interruption during the holiday period.

Previous Bank Holidays in May
Banks remained closed earlier this month on May 1 for May Day and Buddha Purnima. Other regional holidays in May included Rabindranath Tagore's Birth Anniversary on May 9, State Day on May 16, and Kazi Nazrul Islam's birth anniversary on May 26 in select states. Apart from festival-related holidays, banks also remained shut on the second Saturday (May 9), fourth Saturday (May 23), and all Sundays during the month. The next scheduled weekly bank holiday will fall on Sunday, May 31.
