Market Update: Asia and US Stocks Fall on Rising Oil Prices and Inflation Concerns
Market Overview The Asian markets opened lower on Tuesday, with the MSCI Asia Pacific Index falling 0.8%. The Kospi gauge in South Korea, the world's second-best-performing market this year, declined 1.1% after a long weekend. Futures contracts for the S&P 500 Index and the Nasdaq 100 also edged lower in early Asian trading.
Oil Prices Surge Traders remain focused on oil, with West Texas Intermediate crude trading over $71 a barrel, building on Monday's gains. The threat of a full closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for oil movement, continues to fuel concerns. European natural gas prices have also soared, with Qatar shutting the world's largest LNG export plant.
Bond Yields Rise Yields on the benchmark 10-year Treasury edged up to 4.04% as traders curtail expectations of easing by the Federal Reserve. The shift in expectations comes as traders now fully price in a first US rate cut in September, with expectations for a third reduction in 2026 nearly fading.

Haven Assets Gain As investors pare risk, haven assets draw fresh demand. Gold rose 0.6% to $5,355 an ounce, while silver climbed 1.6% to trade above $90 an ounce. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index held its gains from the prior session.
Regional Market Updates In Australia, the 10-year yield jumped early Tuesday, as Reserve Bank Governor Michele Bullock said the central bank is "very alert" to the potential implications for inflation expectations. Japan's five-year bond yields also rose more than five basis points to 1.585%.
Market Outlook The market views the conflict as a relevant geopolitical risk, but one that remains financially contained in the immediate term. Morgan Stanley strategists led by Mike Wilson see the conflict as unlikely to derail their bullish view on US stocks, barring a sharp and sustained surge in oil.
Investor Takeaway
Investors should be cautious of potential market volatility due to rising inflation concerns and oil price surges.
