Asia Pacific Air Traffic Set to Soar with India at the Helm

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has projected that the number of air passengers in the Asia Pacific region will reach 4.1 billion by 2044, a significant increase from the 1.7 billion passengers expected in 2024. This would result in a staggering 2.4 billion additional passengers, underscoring the region's growing importance in the global air travel landscape.

IATA, which represents over 370 airlines and accounts for approximately 85% of the world's air traffic, has identified India as a key player in the growth story of the Asia Pacific region. Sheldon Hee, the grouping's Regional Vice President for Asia Pacific, noted that India has been a significant contributor to the region's growth over the past several years. As one of the world's fastest-growing domestic civil aviation markets, India is poised to continue driving growth in the region over the next decade.

However, the Asia Pacific region also faces several challenges, including infrastructure, taxation, over-regulation, and sustainable growth. To address these issues, airport capital expenditure is projected to reach over USD 2.4 trillion by 2040, with more than half of this amount expected to be spent in the Asia Pacific to address capacity constraints and congestion. Several airports in the region, including Changi and Delhi, are expected to expand to capacities exceeding 100 million passengers per annum (mppa) over the next 20 years.

The air transport industry contributes significantly to the Asia Pacific economy, accounting for around 2.5% of the region's GDP and 2.2% of employment. Furthermore, every USD 1 of value added in aviation generates an estimated USD 3.70 in other sectors, highlighting the industry's broader economic impact.

The 82nd IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit (WATS) is currently underway in the Brazilian city, bringing together around 1,500 industry leaders, government officials, and media representatives. This marks the first time the IATA AGM has taken place in South America since 1999, when it was held in Rio de Janeiro.
