Apple Inc.'s Artificial Intelligence Struggles Delay Smart Home Display

Apple Inc. has delayed the release of its long-in-the-works smart home display, code-named J490, until September 2025. The product was initially scheduled for spring 2025 but was postponed due to issues with the new Siri digital assistant, an integral piece of the device's interface.

The delay highlights Apple's struggles in artificial intelligence, with Siri lying at the heart of its AI strategy. The company has pushed back long-promised features, including some unveiled to consumers nearly two years ago, creating discord between its software and hardware plans. The smart display itself has been finished for several months, but the company is now looking to release it in September, when Apple anticipates that the new Siri will finally be complete.

Key Features of the smart home display include a 7-inch screen, a single USB-C port for power, and the classic Apple silver aluminum casing. The device will be the first of multiple Apple home devices, including a version with a 9-inch screen attached to a robotic limb planned for next year.

Apple's new Siri features are expected to be ready by the time it launches the iPhone 18 Pro in September, with the updated Siri able to tap users' personal data to better fulfill queries. The company is also revamping the interface and underlying AI models to make Siri more of a modern chatbot.

Apple's smart home rollout is arriving several years after similar products from Amazon.com Inc. and Alphabet Inc.'s Google, but the company should be able to capitalize on its existing product ecosystem, with a user base of over 2.5 billion.

Investor Takeaway

Investors should be cautious about Apple's delayed product launches due to AI development challenges.
