Anthropics Valuation Jumps to $965 Billion, Outpacing OpenAI
Anthropic Raises $65 Billion in Funding Round, Valuation Surpasses $965 Billion
May 28 - Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) company, has announced a significant funding round, raising $65 billion at a post-money valuation of $965 billion. This valuation surpasses that of OpenAI, which was last valued at $852 billion post-money in March, intensifying the competitive landscape in the rapidly evolving AI sector.
The funding round, led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital, with Coatue and ICONIQ as co-leads, represents a major milestone for Anthropic. The company's valuation has more than doubled from $380 billion in February, reflecting its swift rise as a leading competitor in the AI race and intense investor demand for stakes in frontier companies. This growth is largely driven by the increasing adoption of Anthropic's chatbot, Claude, across global enterprise customers.
The new valuation puts Anthropic ahead of OpenAI, a fierce competitor in the AI sector. Both companies are planning to tap the public market, possibly as quickly as this year, to acquire the computational resources necessary to power their services and train new models. Anthropic has struggled to meet demand in recent months, forcing it to institute usage limits during peak hours and incentivize off-peak use by offering more compute during that time.

Notably, the funding round comprises $15 billion of previously committed investments from hyperscalers, including $5 billion from Amazon. Amazon had previously invested $8 billion in Anthropic and committed to investing up to $25 billion. As part of the agreement, Anthropic has committed to spending more than $100 billion over the next 10 years on Amazon's cloud technologies.

Anthropic's collaboration with these partners and investors will be crucial in scaling its products and services.
