American Airlines Sees Strong Demand Amid Rising Fuel Costs
American Airlines Group Inc. continues to experience robust demand for travel, despite a surge in jet fuel prices and a decline in consumer confidence in the US. According to the airline's CEO, Robert Isom, travel remains a bargain for consumers, and demand is strong across both international and domestic routes, as well as for premium offerings.
In an interview with Bloomberg TV on Wednesday, Isom stated that the airline expects similar levels of profitability in 2026 as it did in 2025, despite a significant increase in fuel costs. The airline reported an adjusted net income excluding special items of $237 million in 2025.
The bullish assessment of demand comes at a time when consumer confidence is decreasing. The Conference Board's gauge of confidence dropped 0.7 point to 93.1 on Tuesday, amid rising prices due to the war in Iran. The recent spike in fuel prices is particularly challenging for lower-income households, despite a stable labor market and few signs of broad layoffs.
To capitalize on higher-paying customers, American's fleet upgrades and new aircraft will add more premium seating on its aircraft. While low-cost airlines are facing pressure from rising fuel costs, American has stated that it will not grow through acquisitions, but instead will focus on organic growth. The airline may be "opportunistic" about acquiring assets such as aircraft or gates, Isom said.
Isom has also reiterated his opposition to a merger with rival United Airlines Holdings Inc. "That was a no from the get go," Isom stated. "At the end of the day, doing something that would be viewed as anti-competitive by just about everybody that looked at it is just something that we don’t spend a lot of time on."
