American Airlines' Buses Replace Flights, Leaving Passengers Surprised
Passengers booked on flights with American Airlines have raised concerns after discovering that some routes are operated by buses instead of aircraft, leaving many surprised at the airport despite holding flight tickets. According to a report in the New York Post, a woman who was traveling from South Bend, Indiana to Chicago O'Hare International Airport shared her experience. After clearing security and reaching her gate, she noticed her checked baggage being loaded onto a coach bus parked on the tarmac, initially assuming it was a transfer to the plane.
The service in question is operated through Landline, a company that partners with airlines to connect smaller cities with major airport hubs. Introduced in 2018, the service is marketed as a "premium motor coach experience" and is designed to replace short-haul regional flights. It currently links passengers to key hubs like Chicago O'Hare and Philadelphia from nearby smaller airports.
Despite the backlash, airline officials maintain that the service is clearly communicated during booking. According to the airline, the experience functions similarly to a flight, with passengers able to check in baggage, earn frequent flyer miles, and access onboard amenities such as Wi-Fi and charging ports.

Landline CEO David Sunde has defended the model, stating that it helps passengers save time and money while offering a comfortable alternative to driving or taking connecting flights. While some passengers have expressed surprise and frustration at the unexpected mode of transportation, others have defended the concept as a practical and efficient system.
| Route | Distance | Original Flight Duration | Bus Travel Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Bend, IN to Chicago O'Hare International Airport | 110 miles (177 km) | 1 hour 15 minutes | 2 hours 30 minutes |
Online reactions to the incident were mixed, with some users defending the concept while others mocked the experience. One user pointed out that at smaller airports, passengers can check in and have their baggage loaded directly onto the bus, which then drops them inside the terminal at the destination, eliminating the need for additional security checks or expensive transfers like airport taxis or shuttles. Another user responded with sarcasm, recalling how passengers at Mumbai airport often joke about being taken by bus to aircraft parked far from the terminal, but noted that at least in those cases, there is still an actual flight waiting at the end of the ride.
