Ambuja Cements Stock Declines 2.5% Following Q4 Earnings: Weak EBITDA, Margin Pressure Offset Tax-Led Profit Gain
Ambuja Cements Ltd Stock Falls 2.5 Percent Following Q4 Results
Ambuja Cements Ltd's stock price declined by 2.5 percent in early trade on Tuesday, reaching Rs 434. This decline marks an extension of the pressure faced by the company following its fiscal fourth quarter results. Despite a sharp rise in reported profit, weak operating performance and margin compression weighed heavily on investor sentiment.
The company's operational metrics showed a miss, with EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) falling and margins contracting sharply during the quarter. This contraction in margins was primarily due to higher fuel, freight, and other input costs. Furthermore, EBITDA per tonne remained weak, indicating pressure on profitability at the unit level.
Brokerage firm HSBC has maintained a 'Buy' rating on the stock but reduced its target price to Rs 560 per share. The brokerage attributed the Q4 miss to flat realizations and elevated freight costs. A key concern highlighted by HSBC is the weak EBITDA per tonne, although it noted that management remains focused on improving capacity utilization and driving cost efficiencies.

A positive aspect highlighted by the brokerage is the company's cost reduction roadmap, which targets a saving of around Rs 500 per tonne. This targeted saving could support margins going forward if executed effectively.
While the company's reported consolidated profit after tax rose sharply in Q4, this was largely driven by one-off tax reversals and deferred tax benefits linked to recent mergers. On a normalized basis, profit declined year-on-year, reflecting the underlying weakness in operating performance.
