David Luan, Vice President, Agents and Head of Amazon's San Francisco artificial intelligence lab, is leaving the company after two years. Luan made the announcement on LinkedIn, stating that he will be departing at the end of this week to pursue new opportunities.
Key Achievements at Amazon
During his tenure, Luan led Amazon's agents R&D effort and the San Francisco AI lab, scaling up agent training recipes and conducting new research in reinforcement learning (RL). The lab's technology was implemented in AWS services, including partnerships with Hertz, 1Password, and Amazon.com.

Leadership Transition
Peter Desantis, SVP of utility computing products at AWS, will take over Luan's role. Desantis has spent 27 years at Amazon and has extensive experience in AI research and development.

Luan cited the proximity of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) as the reason for his departure, stating that he wants to focus 100% of his time on teaching AI systems new capabilities.

Luan co-founded Adept, which was acquired by Amazon in 2024. Prior to Adept, he held various roles, including Director at Google Research, VP of Engineering at OpenAI, and CEO of Dextro.
