Carlyle Group, a private equity firm, is in advanced talks to sell its 24% stake in Nxtra Data Ltd, the data centre business of Bharti Airtel, to Alpha Wave Global. The deal is expected to close soon, according to sources.
Background
Carlyle acquired its stake in Nxtra in 2020 for approximately Rs 1,780 crore ($235 million). The firm has been looking to exit Nxtra to capitalize on the rapid growth of the data centre industry, driven by advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and increased demand for data storage.

Nxtra Data is a leading player in the Indian data centre industry, with over 120 edge data centres, 2 hyperscale data centres, and 12 enterprise-grade data centres across key locations. As of March 31, 2025, Nxtra had a significant market share in India's data centre capacity.
Financial Performance
Nxtra has reported a 13.33% increase in revenue from operations in FY25. The company's compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of revenues over the last five years stood at approximately 14%, from Rs 1,109 crore in FY21 to Rs 2,103 crore in FY25.

Market Outlook
India's data centre market is expected to experience rapid capacity expansion over the next decade, driven by digitalization, AI adoption, and regulatory push for local data storage. Deloitte projects that installed data centre capacity in India will rise from approximately 1.5 GW in 2025 to 8-10 GW by 2030, representing a significant increase in infrastructure build-out.
