Alibaba's Tech Lead for Qwen Open-Source Model Steps Down

Junyang Lin, also known as Justin, has announced his departure as the tech lead for Alibaba's Qwen open-source model, effective immediately. The surprise move has sent shockwaves through the global developer community and raises questions about Alibaba's pivot into Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Background

As one of the most influential figures in Alibaba's transition into AI, Lin played a crucial role in the company's efforts to develop its next growth engine beyond online shopping and cloud computing. The Qwen series of large language models are among the top-performing offerings globally and serve as the technical foundation for a suite of consumer apps, including Alibaba's newly revamped chatbot.

Career Highlights

Lin, who holds a master's degree from Peking University, has been working on building generalist models at Alibaba since 2022. He served as tech lead for the Qwen large language and multimodal model series and oversaw its open-source initiatives. In 2023, he set up a team working on robotics and embodied AI within Qwen.

Recent Comments

In a January forum in Beijing, Lin stated that Chinese companies are unlikely to leapfrog the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic PBC with fundamental breakthroughs in AI over the next three to five years. He noted that Alibaba's resources are stretched thin, with most of its compute dedicated to meeting delivery demands.

Company Reaction

An Alibaba spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Lin's departure. The company's plans for its AI initiatives remain unclear in the wake of this unexpected development.

Investor Takeaway

Investors should be cautious of potential disruptions to Alibaba's AI pivot following the departure of its tech lead.
