Airbnb CEO Forecasts Rise in Automation-Driven Job Displacement Among Middle Management Ranks
Airbnb CEO Warns "Pure People Managers" May Struggle in AI-Driven Workplaces
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky has sounded a warning that traditional management structures may be on the verge of collapse as companies increasingly adopt artificial intelligence (AI) tools. Speaking on the "Invest Like The Best" podcast this week, Chesky argued that managers who only supervise employees without contributing directly to work will lose relevance in the age of AI.
This comes at a time when major technology firms are reshaping management structures to take advantage of AI's potential to improve productivity. Airbnb has already seen significant benefits from its adoption of AI, with the technology now generating nearly 60% of the code written inside the company. This has enabled teams to launch products faster and operate with leaner structures.
In the future, Chesky believes that managers will need to work closely with teams and understand the details of projects, rather than spending most of their time in meetings or performance reviews. This shift towards a more collaborative approach to management is consistent with the views of other technology executives, including Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, who recently announced that the company would remove "pure manager" roles and reduce layers of management.

Block CEO Jack Dorsey has also argued against permanent middle-management structures, while Meta has spent years trimming management layers to speed up decision-making. Experts say that AI is increasingly capable of handling tasks such as reporting, scheduling, tracking performance, and analyzing data, which were once the domain of middle managers.
As a result, companies are demanding leaders who can combine technical knowledge with team leadership. Market analysts note that managers who act as "player coaches" and contribute directly to projects are more likely to remain valuable in AI-driven workplaces.
While Chesky has warned that companies should not completely replace young workers with AI systems, he has also emphasized the importance of hiring graduates and interns in order to develop future leaders. Earlier this year, he argued that while AI can improve efficiency, companies risk damaging their long-term leadership pipeline if entry-level jobs disappear entirely.
