Air India Express Managing Director Aloke Singh to Step Down on 19 March

Aloke Singh, credited with transforming Air India Express from a niche state carrier to a private-sector player, will depart as managing director and chief executive officer on 19 March. Singh's five-year tenure covered the airline's sale to the Tata Group and its merger with AIX Connect.

Air India Express, Air India's low-cost subsidiary, will be led by captain Hamish Maxwell as accountable manager, responsible for ensuring the airline's safety oversight and operational standards. The company has yet to announce a successor for the chief executive role.

During his tenure, Singh led the airline through significant operational challenges, large-scale integration, and rapid expansion. Air India Express has expanded its fleet fourfold to more than 100 aircraft and widened its domestic and short-haul international network across 14 overseas destinations.

Key milestones include the merger of Air India Express with AirAsia India, completed in October 2024, and the unveiling of a new brand identity in 2023. The airline's fleet expansion and operational growth have positioned it as India's 3rd largest narrow-body operator.

Financial Projections Internal projections show Air India Express approaching operating profitability, with the airline expected to report an operating profit in the second half of FY26, supported by improving unit economics, tighter cost controls, and stronger operational performance.

Consolidated Revenue Consolidated revenue grew 26% to ₹16,138 crore in FY25, supported by fleet expansion and healthy passenger load factors across domestic and international operations.

Financial Performance Losses widened to ₹10,955 crore in FY25, with the operating margin declining to negative 23.21% due to higher costs linked to rapid fleet induction.
