Adani Group Restores Former Coal Mine in Surguja Region with 1.6 Million Tree Plantation
Adani Enterprises Transforms Coal Mine into Lush Green Landscape
In a remarkable example of ecological restoration, Adani Enterprises Ltd has been working to transform a coal mine in Chhattisgarh's Surguja district into a green landscape. The company has planted over 1.6 million trees and saplings across 568 hectares at the Parsa East and Kanta Basan (PEKB) mine, a significant step in restoring mined land and enhancing biodiversity in the region.
The project, which is operated by Adani Enterprises in partnership with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (RVUNL), has demonstrated the potential for mined land to be restored after coal extraction. The company aims to increase the green cover to over 4 million trees by the end of the decade as part of its efforts to restore mined land and enhance biodiversity.
Under the programme, 40 trees are planted for every tree removed for mining activities. Native species such as Sal, Mahua, Tendu, Amaltas, and Sidha have been replanted, with a reported survival rate of about 88 per cent. The company has also developed a 3.5-hectare nursery housing about 500,000 saplings and achieved successful regeneration of Sal forests in the area.
